Over a two-year period, the plants on the East Lansing campus were periodically harvested. Leafy parts stored on average 168 grams of carbon per square meter, the roots and the soil respectively stored 160 and 300 grams on average. Combined, each plot had the capacity to store 375 grams of C02 per square meter.

The researchers estimated the city of Detroit has 219 acres of roof space available for conversion. If black tar roofs were retrofitted, 55,000 tons of CO2 could be removed from the air — enough CO2 to offset the carbon emissions of 10,000 mid-sized SUVs or trucks for an entire year, they calculated.”

Or at least slow down substantially. Anybody who knows me on a personal level knows that I can take it too far, and I usually do. So to save myself the risk of losing my dearest relationships, for my health’s sake, and to a lesser extent for the sake of my bank account, I’ve decided to keep it social or not drink at all (if a really bad day comes along, maybe that’s an exception). The last drink I had was on Thursday (afternoon at lunch. That’s how I roll. Or at least, how I used to roll). Only one person at work knows about my decision to do this. Somebody else at work commented that I look much more healthy and lively than I have for the last few months. He didn’t know that I haven’t been drinking, but still noticed the change in my appearance. It amazes me that already people are noticing that I look better. I definitely feel better. I feel more aware (compared to my in-between sober periods of time), more awake in the morning, my appetite has grown, and my vision seems to be a bit better. I can better formulate thoughts and understand situations better. But one of the biggest changes I’ve noticed in myself (and one of the reasons I really wanted to quit) is that I have more control over myself. During this particularly stressful time, not just because of the holidays but everything else going on, I’ve been having a hard time keeping it together. But over the last few days I’ve found that it’s been much easier to bring myself back to normal. I don’t know why I didn’t do this sooner. Hopefully it will last. I know I have great support for this, which will help out a lot. So, high five to me!

♥ ♥ ♥ Get it, Mason! Alcohol has its time and place, but it’s so easy to get in a little deeper than one really intends to. I’m happy for you and at the risk of sounding motherly… proud of you, too. :)
